What Cheese Can You Eat While Pregnant? Read the Label

Check cheese type, pasteurization and preparation during pregnancy, with practical label questions and shopping advice.

The cheese aisle has suddenly become a reading test. During pregnancy, the useful checks are the cheese type, whether the milk was pasteurized, and whether that cheese needs heating. Pasteurization is important, but it is not an automatic answer for every cheese or every way it is served. The CDC guide separates these choices.

Read the milk statement first

Look for “made with pasteurized milk” in the ingredient or product information. If you cannot find it, check with the manufacturer or choose a product with clear labeling. A familiar brand name, a picture of a farm or a premium price is not a pasteurization statement.

The FDA dairy guidance explains why unpasteurized milk products are a concern during pregnancy. Keep the packaging long enough to check the exact product rather than searching for a similar looking cheese online.

Then identify the cheese category

Current CDC guidance includes pasteurized cottage cheese, cream cheese, string cheese, feta and mozzarella among safer choices. It gives separate advice for other soft cheeses, deli sliced cheeses and queso fresco type cheeses. In particular, the recommendation for fresh queso fresco type cheeses is more cautious even when pasteurized milk was used.

That distinction prevents a common shortcut: “This is pasteurized, therefore every cold cheese dish is fine.” Use the current table for the actual type. For cheeses requiring heating, follow the recommended temperature or steaming-hot preparation rather than melting the surface briefly.

Make the menu question specific

At a cafe, “Is the feta made with pasteurized milk?” is more useful than “Is the salad pregnancy safe?” For a cheese board, ask which cheeses are present and how they were stored. If the answer is only “all local,” you still do not have the preparation information.

At home, start with a clearly labeled cheese and a recipe you understand. A hot dish can be a practical way to use an appropriate cheese, but the heating step needs to reach the food, not just make it look appealing. Follow product directions and current guidance for that category.

Storage belongs in the decision

Keep chilled cheese refrigerated, use clean utensils and follow the package's instructions after opening. A cheese plate left out through an entire party has a different handling history from a portion taken directly from the fridge. Pasteurization does not prevent every contamination that can happen later.

A shorter shopping routine

Choose one or two clearly labeled products you enjoy. Photograph or keep their labels if that helps you remember the details, and check again when packaging or formulation changes. You do not need to memorize the entire cheese counter.

Embryly's barcode scan can help you look up product information, but compare the result with the package in your hand. A database entry can be incomplete or refer to a different version. The label, cheese category and preparation are what make the recommendation meaningful.
