Can You Eat Eggs While Pregnant? Runny, Scrambled and More

Understand US pregnancy guidance for runny eggs, cooked egg dishes and uncooked sauces, with useful ordering questions.

Breakfast has enough decisions without turning the yolk into a debate. US pregnancy guidance recommends eggs cooked until the yolk and white are firm, or pasteurized eggs for preparations that will not be safely cooked. Runny eggs and a thoroughly cooked omelet are different preparations. Start with the FDA egg guide.

Choose the preparation you actually want

Scrambled eggs, a firm omelet or a hard-cooked egg can be practical choices when properly prepared. You do not need to stop enjoying eggs because your usual order was sunny side up. Change the method rather than assuming the whole ingredient is off the menu.

At a restaurant, say “Please cook both the white and yolk until firm.” That is clearer than “pregnancy safe,” which leaves the server guessing at your meaning. If you are ordering an egg dish with meat, ask that the filling be properly cooked as well.

A mixed dish needs its own temperature

The official cooking chart lists temperatures for egg dishes and casseroles. A quiche can have a browned crust and a center that needs more cooking. Check the actual preparation category rather than treating the appearance of the pastry as the finish line.

Use a thermometer according to the recipe and current guidance. For individual eggs, the firm yolk and white recommendation is a useful visible preparation check. For a large mixed dish, measuring the internal temperature is more dependable than watching its edges.

Raw egg can arrive without a shell

Homemade Caesar dressing, mousse, some sauces and eggnog may contain uncooked egg. Ask whether pasteurized egg was used when the recipe will not be cooked. A commercial product can differ from a restaurant's house-made version, so check the actual item rather than assuming every mayonnaise or dressing is the same.

Pasteurized eggs do not remove the need for clean preparation and appropriate storage. Keep utensils clean, follow refrigeration instructions and avoid leaving perishable dishes on a table for a long meal.

Country differences deserve a clear label

Some countries give different advice about particular certified egg supplies. This article follows US guidance. If you live elsewhere, use your local public health advice and your care team's recommendations. A rule copied from a foreign forum may depend on a certification your eggs do not have.

Keep breakfast flexible

Try eggs with toast and washed fruit, or add properly cooked vegetables to a simple scramble. If eggs currently smell unappealing, another breakfast is fine. You are choosing food for your day, not passing a nutrition exam.

Embryly can help identify ingredients in an egg dish. It cannot verify the yolk's temperature from a photo or know which egg product went into a sauce. Those are details to check with the recipe, package or cook.
